How to calculate hours worked with breaks

To calculate time worked from clock-in and clock-out, find the elapsed time between both timestamps and subtract your unpaid lunch break. Divide the remaining minutes by 60 to convert worked hours to decimal hours for timesheets.

Work hours formula (Clock-out − Clock-in) − Unpaid break
9 to 5 with 30m lunch
8:30 AM – 5:00 PM (30m break)
Overnight 10 PM – 6 AM (30m break)
Quick answers

Work hours & break calculation FAQs

How do overnight shifts work?

If your clock-out time is earlier than your clock-in time (for example, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM), the overnight shift hours calculator automatically counts clock-out as the following day (+1 day), for shifts shorter than 24 hours.

Which breaks should I enter—paid or unpaid?

Only enter unpaid meal or lunch breaks that are deducted from your shift. Short paid rest breaks stay included in your worked hours total, so you do not need to subtract them.

How do I convert worked hours to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60 and round to two decimal places. For example, 7 hours 30 minutes equals 7.50 decimal hours (not 7.30), and 7 hours 45 minutes equals 7.75 decimal hours.

How many hours is 9 to 5 with a 30-minute lunch?

From 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM is 8 hours of elapsed time. Subtracting a 30-minute unpaid lunch break leaves 7 hours 30 minutes (7.50 decimal hours or 450 minutes).
